Research objectives

The success of a just green transition requires an understanding of what justice means from the point of view of different actors: how risks, benefits, and impacts are distributed and how they are considered in planning and decision-making.

What does this mean in the lives of Northern Finns, in planning and decision-making of land use activities in practice? To answer this, we need a wide range of actors and experts, and many valuable local-level views and experiences on how to respond to the environmental, social, and economic challenges brought by the green transition.

Focus on Northern Finland

The REBOUND project responds to social and economic challenges caused by climate change, biodiversity loss, and related land use changes.

Climate and environmental change and related land use challenges can be better responded to with interdisciplinary and joint planning, and thus promote socio-ecological resilience. This inclusive approach of REBOUND steers the journey towards a just and sustainable future.

The focus of the research activities is on Northern Finland, where the change in energy policy and land use caused by national climate goals and the changed geopolitical situation has already caused conflicts at the local level.
