For the first time ever, the conference of the Finnish Anthropological Society will be held in Rovaniemi and the interest to the event has been overwhelming. The Arctic Anthropology Research Team from the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland is hosting and organizing the event, taking place 21st-23rd March, 2023.

Registration is closed now and the organizers are
excited to welcome a huge number of participants here in the North – about 300
people have registered. The interest has been above average which is most likely
connected to the fact that it is the first conference of the Finnish Anthropological
Society after a four years pandemic-induced break.

– We had
not expected this huge amount of responses and had to change the original plans. Of
course, it is great to see how many people want to travel all the way to Rovaniemi
to discuss their research with other international experts from the field. Right
now, we are doing our best to organize everything so that we can have a great
conference together, says Nuccio Mazzullo, senior
researcher at the Arctic Centre and member of the organizing committee.

The overall topic of the conference is “Relations and
beyond”, the name reflecting the importance of the term “relations”
in the field of anthropology. The organizers aim to bring this field to
international attention by hosting more than 30 panels with different approaches to
the topic. The three keynote speakers, which have made an everlasting impact on
anthropological research and theories, are Dame Marilyn
Strathern from the University of Cambridge, Tim
Ingold from the University of Aberdeen, and Piers
Vitebsky from the University of Cambridge.
