Arctic Variety opens up Finland as an Arctic country
Finland will chair the Arctic Council in 2017 – 2019 but what makes Finland an Arctic country? Answers to that can be found in a new book “Arctic Variety” published by the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland and Europeinformation of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
The book gives a voice to everyday actors and daily life of the
Arctic in various professions and parts of Finland. Finland will be celebrating the
100th anniversary of its independence next year as a happy, proud and understanding
Arctic country. The book covers Arctic themes like tourism, design, economy,
shipping, education, health care, research and diplomacy by meeting individuals who
actually work with these fields.
The authors of the book
are Marjo Laukkanen, Science Journalist, and
Markku Heikkilä, Head of Science Communications, both
from the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland. In 2013, same authors wrote the
book “Arctic Calls”, also published by the Europeinformation.
“Arctic Variety” is published in four languages – Finnish, Swedish,
North Saami and English – and it can be ordered free of charge via the website of
the Europe Information at http://julkaisut.um.fi/c/23-uutuudet/?sort=name_a.
The book is available online and it comes with five videos
telling about everyday life in the Arctic. The videos can be viewed and the link to
the online book can be find at http://www.arcticcentre.org/EN/communications/variety.
The book was published at the Helsinki Book Fair, 27th
October.
