Exhibition shows nature photographs of Splachnum
Korpisuon kaunokaiset -exhibition shows nature photographs of the endangered moss species. The exhibition can be seen in Arktikum Science Centre from 15th July until 30th August 2025.
Splachnum is a type of moss of which colorful
appearance easily catches attention. It is increasingly endangered, and researchers
have been trying to get more data on its distribution. Last year, the national
working group called on the public to report findings of Splachnum across
Finland.
The public call gained attention, and people sent
photographs of moss findings from all over the country. These observations show the
importance of citizen science. The most amazing photos are on display in Korpisuon
kaunokaiset photo exhibition.
Splachnum is known for its colors
and unique appearance, as well as its unusual way of life. It grows on patches of
dung by large herbivores such as moose and deer.
