The new immersive and science-based exhibition “Arctic Opposites” introduces visitors to life and special characteristics of the Arctic.

After eight months of renovation, the science centre
at Arktikum, run by the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland, will re-open to
the public on Finland’s Independence Day 6 Decem-ber 2024.

The
name of the new exhibition reflects how life in the Arctic has adjusted to strong
seasonal variation. The amount of sunlight, temperature and nutrient availability
vary drastically with the seasons.  

The
renewed permanent exhibition explores the Arctic through five main themes: The
Arctic, Cryosphere, Eight Seasons, Living Arctic and Exploring the Arctic.

– The Arctic is one of the most fascinating regions in the world. Our
exhibition explores this unique area in an experiential way, based on current
research. Our mission is to present things in a way that allows visitors to learn in
interesting and fun ways, says the Chief Executive Pro-ducer Nicolas
Gunslay.

Director of the Arctic Centre at the University of
Lapland Johanna Ikävalko is extremely hap-py about the opening of the long-awaited
new exhibition, especially as there is a huge demand for the information presented
by the science centre.

–  Global warming and
environmental change in the Arctic are critical issues on a global scale. We humans
have a great responsibility for how we act in the Arctic and the consequences of our
actions. The Arctic Centre’s main role is therefore to provide information
about the region and the developments taking place there. The importance of the
information we provide to support science education and wise decision-making has
increased at a time when the Arctic is undergoing the greatest transformation in its
history.

To celebrate the opening and Independence Day, admission
to the exhibitions will be free on Friday 6 December from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
