Researchers developed an Arctic Environmental Responsibility Index
Oil and gas extraction companies operating in the Arctic are ranked better on average than mining companies.
A multidisciplinary group of researchers have
developed an index to rank Arctic extractive industries in terms of environmental
responsibility. One of the members in the group has been Florian Stammler, research
professor in Arctic Centre anthropology team.
– We thought that
creating an index might motivate companies to rank well, and undertake measures to
come in high. If this works, then the index could have a positive effect even on the
life of Arctic people, Stammler says in his blog.
Bigger
companies seem often rank better than smaller ones. Companies in Norway often act
environmentally responsibly and oil and gas extraction companies are ranked better
on average than mining companies.
