Traveling

By plane

If you arrive by air, you will most likely transfer in Helsinki. The flight from Helsinki to Rovaniemi takes about one hour. Rovaniemi Airport is located outside the city, approximately 10 km from the city centre.

Getting from Rovaniemi Airport to the City Centre

Airport Express shuttle bus is the main public transport link between the airport and the city centre. The journey goes via Santa Claus Village, and tickets can be purchased on board. The current one-way fare is €8. The bus departs from directly outside the arrivals area and operates approximately every 25 minutes during daytime hours.

Taxi: Taxis are available outside the terminal during scheduled arrivals, and they can also be pre-booked. A taxi ride to central Rovaniemi typically costs about €30–40. Exact pricing depends on the taxi company, time, traffic conditions, and any airport surcharge. Always agree on the taxi fare in advance. In addition to taxis, Uber and Bolt operate in Rovaniemi.

By train

You can also travel to Rovaniemi by train. Travelling from Helsinki to Rovaniemi by train takes approximately 8.5 hours at its fastest. Several connections are available daily, including overnight trains. If you would like a sleeper cabin on the night train, it must be booked in advance. The night train is slower and with a cabin more expensive than the daytime train, but it also has its own unique atmosphere. The railway station is about 1 km from the city centre.

Getting from Rovaniemi Railway Station to the City Centre

Rovaniemi Railway Station is connected to the city centre by local bus line 8 (Linkkari), which runs between the railway station, the city centre and Santa Claus Village. The city centre is in Zone A. A single fare is 3.6 € when purchased on the bush in cash or by card.

Conference venue

The main conference venue is at the University of Lapland (Yliopistonkatu 5, Rovaniemi). The conference dinner will be held at another venue near the city center. The location for Monday’s workshop has not yet been confirmed.

Accommodation

Rovaniemi offers a wide range of accommodation options at different price levels, from hostels and apartments to comfortable mid-range and higher-end hotels.

As the conference takes place outside the main tourist season, we expect good overall availability in the city. As a rough example, a standard double room in May often falls in the range of €110–€150 per night, but prices vary by hotel, booking time, and cancellation options. We are also negotiating special conference rates with 2–3 centrally located hotels, and we will publish details on this page closer to the conference.

You can book directly with the hotels. Apartments are best found through Booking.com and Airbnb.
