The Honorary Consulate of Italy in Finnish Lapland opens in Arktikum house in Rovaniemi in September 2018. Senior Researcher Nuccio Mazzullo from the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland has been working as Honorary Vice Consul of Italy since August 2016.

Honorary consul monitors the rights of Italians and
provides advice and guidance for its citizens and companies in Finland. The embassy
on Italy locates in Helsinki and the honorary consulate in Rovaniemi is part of
Italy’s network of diplomatic missions. The need for guidance and advice in
Rovaniemi has grown because of the boom of tourism in Lapland. Former Honorary Vice

The President of Italy,
Sergio Mattarella, awarded Mazzullo the recognition of
knighthood as “Officer of The Order of the Star of Italy” in 2015. The knighthood
was in recognition of services to the Italian Republic and its Arctic affairs in
foreign countries and in Finland. Nuccio Mazzullo is an anthropologist of the Arctic
Centre at the University of Lapland. In his research, he has specialized in Finnish
Lapland, with particular interest in Sámi culture and reindeer herding. He has been
working at the Arctic Centre since 2007 and got his first touch to Finland in 1990
when he came to Lapland to make his first fieldwork.
